Baradene College Performing Arts - Education outside the classroom

It helps now and then to step back and take the long view. The kingdom is not only beyond our efforts, it is beyond our vision. This is what we are about. We plant seeds that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise. We lay foundations that will need further development. We provide yeast that produces effects far beyond our capabilities.

Archbishop Oscar Romero

The Performing Arts Faculty offers several opportunities for students to express themselves and to improve their skills in the Performing Arts.

Besides regular classes, we also offer activities outside of the classroom in Dance, Drama, and Music.

Dance

*** Dance Zone Baradene ***

·         NZAMD Jazz Examinations and Medal Tests – Students work on their technique and dance skill whilst working through the syllabus. Each student sits their examination at the end of the year or they can opt to sit a medal test instead. Class numbers are small and ability based, ranging from absolute beginners to more advanced students.

·         Performance Groups – There are two performance groups Year 7/8 and Year 9/10. These groups are for more able dancers who are able to commit to a range of competitions and events throughout the year. Performance class spaces are limited and dancers need to audition for a position.

·         Development Squads – There are two development squads Year 7/8 and Year 9/10. These squads are for students who auditioned for the performance groups but still need to develop their technique, flexibility or performance experience.  Students in these squads need to be available for a range of competitions throughout the year.

·         Private Dance Tuition – This is for students wanting to work on Solo, Duo or Trio competition work or boost their technique through one-on-one or small group tuition.

Teacher:  Keporah Ashby.  Keporah is a Baradene Alumnae. She is trained in Jazz, Hip Hop, Ballet and Tap.

Music

The Baradene Music Academy

The Baradene Music Academy is an after school music Programme held on Thursdays in the Music Department from 3.30 – 5pm.

It aims to create a positive, supportive group musical learning experience after school for Years 7-10 students, providing a sound beginning foundation in performance and theory.   It includes half hour tuition in the chosen instrument, half an hour in musical theory and half an hour ensemble/band practice.

The Academy offers group tuition by experienced teachers in strings, flute, piano/keyboard, wind /brass (depending on demand). The Students prepare for an Academy concert at the end of Term 2 and Term 4.

Term 1 2012 is 7 weeks and begins on Feb 16 with the last session on March 29th (the week before Easter).

Cost: $20 per week

The Academy is directed by Louise Porter. As the musical director and conductor of the Baradene Senior Orchestra for the last 15 years, Louise has a great passion for encouraging young people to achieve their very best in music. She has observed over the years the very positive benefits of learning a musical instrument and playing in an orchestra. As a teacher of history and music and a mother of 3 Baradene Alumnae her involvement with the College led to conducting choirs and orchestras. Louise has also been involved in Church music as a cantor at St Michael's, Remuera.

Duchesne Orchestra (Junior Orchestra)

The Duchesne Orchestra is for players from Yr 7 – 10. We perform at regular school concerts each term and also at award assemblies and end-of-year prize giving. Sometimes we join other school groups for festivals or play out in the community e.g. at Retirement Villages where the girls’ efforts are always appreciated.

For those girls who play an orchestral instrument, joining an orchestra is a great motivator – they will improve skills such as sight-reading and playing in tune more quickly and it is fun to play in a large group.  It’s also a training group for the senior orchestra and as such we cover performance technique, ensemble playing, following a conductor, playing harmonies rather than just the tune, building a repertoire of pieces both for our own enjoyment as well as performance.

Conductor: Joanne Johnston: I’m a fully registered school teacher with a BMus (Hons), ABRSM Performance Certificate and an IRMT diploma. I have played in Auckland orchestras, backing ensembles and quartets for many years and I currently play for Auckland- based quartet String Silhouette, as well as in the Manukau Symphony orchestra. My teaching experience ranges from classroom, to small group/ ensemble coaching to individual cello lessons – both at schools (I teach at 6 Auckland Schools) and privately in my studio. My students consistently achieve success in the Royal Schools exams at all levels. I enjoy directing larger ensembles and orchestras and currently am Music Director/Conductor of a popular Community Orchestra based in Parnell (Philharmonic Society Orchestra).

Baradene College Senior Orchestra

The Baradene College Senior Orchestra is made up of 35-40 players largely drawn from Years 9 – 13 students of Grade 4 standard and above.

It is an enthusiastic and vital, vertical community within Baradene where the girls are playing a wide variety of music from Baroque to contemporary which inspires and they enjoy.

We perform at School Masses, Assemblies, Concerts and Prizegivings. The Baradene College Orchestra always participates successfully in the Annual KBB Orchestra Festival. For the KBB Festival Orchestra   and the annual Fundraising Concert we collaborate with the musicians from Sacred Heart College and preparation for these special performances involve extra rehearsals.

Each year we play at the Remuera Library to celebrate NZ Music Month and at other venues such as the Central Library and Ranfurly Care.

The Baradene College Orchestra benefits greatly as a foundation member of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra Schools Programme: APOPS which enables our students to attend the APO Music Discovery Concert each year. There are also regular times throughout the year where girls can be taught and work with professional musicians from the city’s finest Orchestra.

We are keen to encourage and build up all sections of the orchestra especially the strings: Violin, viola, cello and Bass

Cost:
There is one Orchestra fee covering both orchestras per family of $25 per annum

Rehearsals:
The Orchestra meets each Thursday morning 7.30 - 8.40 and Thursday lunchtime in the Baradene Auditorium.

Commitment: The students are expected to make a regular commitment to rehearsals, performances and concerts

Conductor and Musical Director: Louise Porter As a young violinist Louise loved the opportunity of playing with others in Chamber Music and Orchestra and is keen to nurture this at Baradene. Louise's direction of the orchestra has seen it gain success in the annual Auckland KBB Orchestra Festival achieving Silver and Bronze awards in the chamber and full orchestra categories. Between 2002 and 2008 Louise successfully organised and led four College Music Trips to Sydney, Melbourne, China and Italy and France with performances highlights in the Great Hall in Beijing, St Peters Basilica in the Vatican and at St Thibault’s –the birthplace of St Madeleine Sophie.

The Baradene Chamber Orchestra

This year we are very fortunate to welcome Dr John Thomson as conductor of the Baradene Chamber Orchestra assisted by Mrs Louise Porter.

The Chamber Orchestra is a special opportunity for string players to develop their string playing and perform together and with soloists in a more intimate setting.

The College encourages more advanced students wishing to enter the Schools Chamber Music Contest in June.

The Chamber Orchestra rehearses every Tuesday morning in the Music Department from 7.30 -8.40 am

Both Orchestras provide wonderful instrumental opportunities in a supportive, positive environment and enrich the life at Baradene with school performances and connect with the wider community through playing at festivals, competitions and within the community e.g. Remuera and Central Libraries. They have achieved Bronze and Silver Awards at the Annual KBB Orchestra Festival in August. Viva la musica!

Dr John Thomson:  recently returned to New Zealand after serving as Professor of Violin in the USA at several universities. He gained his doctorate in violin performance, has toured as a violin soloist, and has been featured on several CD recordings. He is happy to return to his hometown and to work with the next generation of New Zealand's young musicians.

Baradene College CHOIR 2012

The choir this year will give students the opportunity to develop their skills of musicianship, as we cover a wide repertoire of music to be used in various performance opportunities - masses, school assemblies, concerts and the Big Sing competition.
We will start in February with an open choir, allowing any student to come along and give it a try, before auditions in late February using one of the songs we have all learnt as an audition piece.

Opportunities will be given for students to develop their own skills in harmonising with others, learning to use their voices well, and also for solo performances and conducting for students who are keen to give this a go.

A day camp is envisaged in term 1 to allow us to get to grips with a wide range of music in a short amount of time. We will also work with the orchestra on some pieces, and have visiting choral experts to help us to develop our skills still further.

Come along and use the most easily transported musical instrument of all - your voice!

Conductor - Mrs Belinda Sydenham:  I have been singing ever since I remember, and still have the programme from the APPA concert in the Auckland Town Hall from when I was 10 years old. Over the years I have been a member of many choirs - University of Auckland Singers, the National Youth Choir of New Zealand, the Auckland Choral society. More recently I have been singing with Musica Sacra, a choir which performs sacred music in both evensongs at St Matthews in the City, and in concerts through the year, as well as recording CDs. I am also a member of a newly formed choir, the Stellar Singers, and we perform more modern music of many different styles.

I look forward to sharing my love of singing in a group with this year’s choir and hope that we can build a strong role in the school as part of special occasions, school concerts and as enthusiastic participants in the Big Sing competition.

Rehearsals will be on Wednesday afternoons after school, from 3:30 until approximately 5 pm.

This is an auditioned choir for Year 7 and 8 students.  Students begin regular weekly rehearsals in Term 1. They prepare repertoire for the annual APPA Music Festival in November and take part in school concerts, assemblies and Masses.

In 2012 there will be a new musical involvement for singers from both Sacred Heart College and Baradene which will provide opportunities to train with highly experienced conductors and perform to wider audiences.

Conductor: Alison Wood: I am a full time teacher at Baradene and have been musical director of the 7/8 Choir for the past three years. I am a choral singer and have been a member of the Auckland Choral Society for several years. I am also interested in folk music and sing unaccompanied at a small number of venues.

We generally work on flute technique, tone, breathing and performance. We learn, scales, studies, exercises, a number of performance pieces. We also play duets together and optionally prepare for exams. Baradene offers an ABRSM (Royal) exam in the November round so students can sit it at the school. It requires regular dedicated practice between lessons but I also aim to have fun and teach students to enjoy playing as much as I like playing.
