Year 13 Contemporary English 
Marriage, Sex and Death

Welcome to your final year of senior English.  Over the course of the year you will study a range of engaging and challenging texts, some chosen by your teacher and some by you, all sharing common themes and concerns.  You will develop the ability to write effective literary essays in which you closely analyse the features of the texts you have studied and discuss how they enable the writer to communicate with his or her audience effectively.  You will also have the opportunity to undertake a significant research project on a literature topic.  In addition, you will present to your class and teacher a seminar based on some aspect of your course of study.

  HOW TO HAVE A SUCCESSFUL AND ENJOYABLE YEAR 

 

  • Keep an open mind. 
  • Keep on top of your workload by using your diary to record deadlines and homework details. 
  • Make clear notes and keep them safe.  When you have finished a topic, you might want to leave those notes safely at home for revising rather than risk losing them from your bag or on the bus.
And remember –
  • at the start of the year you are not expected to know everything you will need to know to achieve in English this year.  The work might be harder than you are used to at first.  If you are really worried talk to you teacher quick smart! 
  • an essay is not to be feared; it is simply an opportunity for you to show what you know.  Enjoy it! 

ASSESSMENT DETAILS 

Your programme this year is important if you plan to go to university, especially to study English or another language-rich subject.  You should ensure you are clear about the credit requirements for any tertiary course you intend to apply for.  Check with Mrs McLaren or Mrs. Lorimer if you are in doubt.   You and your teacher will decide together which combination of the standards below you will be assessed against, depending on your plans, needs and strengths.

The English Faculty follows the assessment policies and procedures set down by the school.  If you are absent from an assessment, you must see your teacher to obtain the appropriate forms to request an extension.  You must usually have a medical certificate.  When granted, catch-up time is usually offered during lunch-break. 

The English Faculty alsO follows NZQA guidelines on resubmission of internally assessed work and on further assessment opportunities.

All internal assessments are kept by the Faculty for quality assurance purposes.
