Course Content
The Life and Times of Jesus includes aspects of the Jewish society Jesus belonged to (e.g. religious beliefs; cultural traditions; religious, political and social groups) and the key events in the life of Jesus.
The Eucharist and the Church’s Year covers the Church’s special seasons, liturgical colours and feast days; developments in the celebration of the Eucharist from early Christian times until today; the sacred vessels and other special things used for the Eucharist. It is planned that each class will organise their own class Mass during this topic.
The Church’s Story–The Beginnings focuses on important people and events in the first centuries of Christianity, from the birthday of the Church at Pentecost until about AD 800.
Creation and Co-Creation looks at the religious truths contained in the two creation stories in the Book of Genesis in the Bible. It compares creation myths from different cultures. The topic also explores examples of De-Creation in our world, emphasizing the responsibility of human beings as Co-Creators.
The Sacraments of Initiation studies the history, symbols, rituals and meaning of the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.
The Beginnings of the Church in Aotearoa–New Zealand looks at traditional Maori beliefs; the coming of the early New Zealand missionaries; their relationship with the Tangata Whenua; the work of Bishop Pompellier; the Church in Aotearoa-New Zealand today; our role in the Church.
