Our Percussion teacher:
Dr Sam Girling BMus(Hons), PhD
Originally from the UK, Sam studied percussion at Trinity College of Music in London before moving to New Zealand in 2014 to study for a PhD in musicology at the University of Auckland, graduating in 2018. Alongside his studies Sam built a career as a freelance percussionist and teacher and has performed with all the major ensembles in Auckland, including the Auckland Philharmonia, Manukau Symphony Orchestra and Auckland Chamber Orchestra.
He has recently returned from 1.5 years in Germany, where he worked on a research project on early nineteenth-century chamber music at the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn. Sam also teaches on various undergraduate music history and theory topics at the University of Auckland’s School of Music and was recently appointed Production and Marketing Manager with Auckland Choral.
